MEDICAL PSYCHIATRY

Medical Psychiatry or MP, sometimes called Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry or Psychosomatic Medicine, is the specialized area within Psychiatry that is most closely affiliated with other medical fields. Medical Psychiatrists work closely with other doctors (and their patients) in fields such as primary care, medical sub-specialties (Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Oncology…), Surgery, Neurology, and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Obstetrics-Gynecology, among others. MP is focused on a holistic integration of both “mind” and “body.”

The field of MP encompasses such things as:

  • Behavioral, mood, and cognitive effects caused by medical illnesses and their treatments
  • Effects of psychiatric drugs on medical conditions and treatments
  • Physical problems caused by psychiatric disorders and treatments
  • Excessive worry about health or illness
  • Psychological factors causing or worsening physical problems
  • Psychological or behavioral problems impeding adherence with medical care
  • Coping with medical uncertainty and ambiguity, including unexplained medical illness and so-called functional medical conditions

 

Wellsprings Health Associates (WHA) sees patients who are referred by their current physicians or who refer themselves for care. Clinicians at WHA will do the following based on your particular preferences and needs:

  • Perform a careful review of your medical and psychiatric history and current status
  • Communicate and/or collaborate with your other treatment providers
  • Develop a personalized care plan to address the problems with which you want help
  • Optimize your psychiatric medication to fit your symptoms and conditions
  • Provide individual psychotherapy to help cope with and ameliorate your difficulties
  • Refer you to other specialized clinicians for specific problems (e.g., multi-disciplinary pain specialists, dietitians, hypnotherapists, acupuncturists, etc.)
  • Work with you and your partner or family to help those involved in your life to understand what is happening and how to be of help to you
